Mai Funny Avatar the Last Airbender
With the resurgence ofAvatar: The Last Airbender, fans have been reminded of how wonderfully made the show is on all accounts. Ever since it was put on Netflix, new and old fans alike are appreciating the story, animation, and diverse cast of characters. Something that's also being appreciated is the humor of the show.
Despite being dramatic and having heavy themes at times, the show is mostly funny, ranging from the types of situations the characters get into to the funny things they say. There are many humorous lines from the show, and since all of the characters are unique, none of the lines are funny for the same reasons.
10 "She Was Right, Of Course..."
Azula rarely opens up and shares what she's feeling, but one of the times she does is when she told Zuko, Mai, and Ty Lee about her mother. Azula felt like her mom was afraid of her and viewed her as a monster. It was a rare time for Azula to discuss her feelings, which made everyone stare at her in silence.
Then Azula broke the silence by saying, "She was right, of course, but it still hurt." Even though this was one of the times fans felt sorry for her, it was also funny that Azula is aware that of how much of a monster she can be.
9 "Earth Kingdom It Is"
When Zuko and Iroh were betrayed by the Fire Nation, they had to figure out what their next steps were. Since they were enemies to nearly every nation around the world, they didn't have too many options. When talking to each other, they decided that going to the nearby Earth Kingdom would get them killed, but staying out for too long would get them discovered by Azula.
Ultimately, without much thought after, Zuko said "Earth Kingdom it is", and that's where they go. The line is simple but also funny in showing how Zuko and Iroh would rather be killed than be taken over to Azula. It was a succinct line from an episode that highlighted what made Zuko and Iroh's relationship enjoyable.
8 "Jerk Bending"
Sokka values himself as being the funniest member of Team Avatar, and oftentimes, he is. A good example of this is when he finds Aang and Zuko practicing fire bending. He sits down in front of them, calls them jerks, and asks them if he can watch them practice "jerk bending".
When Zuko angrily yells at him to leave, Sokka tells him he was just kidding. As he's getting up to leave, he says to himself, "Jerk bending. Still got it". Jerk bending is funny on its own, but it's also funny how confident Sokka is in his own jokes.
7 "You Can Go Ahead And Let Me Drown Now"
Toph has always had a closer connection to Sokka over everyone else in Team Avatar, and one of the biggest examples of that is when Toph was drowning in the Serpent's Pass. Sokka called out to her and told her he'd rescue her, but Suki jumped into the water before he did to save her. When Suki pulls her out, Toph thinks that it's Sokka and gives her a kiss on the cheek.
However, once Toph finds out it's actually Suki, she lets out an embarrassed chuckle before saying, "You can go ahead and let me drown now." It was a funny line that encompassed just what she might've been feeling in that moment.
6 "My Cabbages!"
A running joke throughout the series is how often the Cabbage Merchant's cart gets destroyed. Whether it inadvertently gets destroyed during a battle, or if an animal eats several of the cabbages, it's always funny how often it happens. What's even funnier is the Cabbage Merchant's reaction when he sees the destroyed cart.
When he sees the destroyed cart, he cries out "My Cabbages!" in a distressing way. Eventually, as he sees his cart get destroyed more and more, his cries become increasingly dramatic, until eventually he couldn't be bothered anymore. Though it can make fans feel bad for the Cabbage Merchant, it's also funny how many times he shouts his iconic line.
5 "The Scar's Not On The Wrong Side!"
The episode where the gang goes to see a play version of themselves is one of the funniest of the show. They had to watch a retelling of their adventures, except the play kept getting details wrong. Most of them were upset about the major changes, but they couldn't say anything because they were supposed to be undercover.
After all of this, a fan of the play dressed as Zuko walked by him and said that his costume was good, but his scar was on the wrong side. Then, Zuko angrily yelled, "The scar's not on the wrong side!" before sulking in his hoodie. Even though fans felt bad for Zuko, it was also funny seeing him be so passionate about it.
4 "Secret Tunnel!"
Sometimes the most memorable parts of the show aren't from the main characters themselves, but side characters. This was the case for the Cabbage Merchant, and it's also true for the musical nomads who helped the gang get to Omashu.
When helping Aang and the others get to Omashu, the nomads told them about a shortcut through a secret tunnel. Afterward, they sing a song that goes, "Secret Tunnel! Secret Tunnel! Through the mountains! Secret, secret, secret, secret tunnel!" The music for the song is so grand, and being one of the best songs from the show, it's hard to hold back a chuckle when listening to it.
3 "I Am Melon Lord!"
In spite of being one of the strongest earth benders in the world, Toph doesn't always take herself too seriously and can still be goofy. A prime example of this is when the gang is training to defeat the Fire Lord.
When they're training, Toph uses a rock soldier with a watermelon for a head in place of the actual Fire Lord. She then hurls flaming rocks towards everyone, one of which almost hits Sokka. When he yells at Toph about it, she declares, "I am not Toph! I am Melon Lord!" It's funny how Toph can still find the humor in such an intense moment.
2 "Drink Cactus Juice! It'll Quench Ya!"
When the gang lost Appa and were trapped in the desert, they eventually were running low on water and had to find something else. When they came across a cactus, Sokka decided to cut it open and drink the juice inside.
The juice makes Sokka hallucinate and causes him to act loopy. After this, he tries to get the others to drink the juice by saying, "Drink cactus juice! It'll quench ya! Nothing's quenchier! It's the quenchiest!" The way he says it is so silly that it easily became one of Sokka's funniest quotes.
1 "That's Rough, Buddy"
Growing up as the son of the Fire Lord didn't give Zuko much chance to socialize. Although he may mean well, he might not always know what to say or how to say it. That's why it's funny when he says awkward things though he's trying to help people.
An example of this is when he's talking with Sokka, and Sokka tells him how Princess Yue turned into the moon. Zuko doesn't know how to console him, so he just says, "That's rough, buddy." It's funny how awkward Zuko's response was, but also sweet that he was really trying to be there for Sokka. A perfect line for Zuko that quickly became one of his most memorable.
